There are Rules for any Game, Right?
If you play Bridge, You have to learn the rules.
There are classes you take and books to read.
If you play football, you have to learn the rules.
Your coach will teach you and you practice.
You are suppose
- to do such and such,
and not to do such and such.
You would be told that you were wrong if you broke the rules.
But no one alerted me to the fact that there were Unwritten and Unspoken rules when you played the "Games" in Business.
It seems that most of the men knew the rules.
Do they have a secret society?
Or, did Fathers only teach Sons the rules in business? But not the Daughters?
Being new in business, I did not know all the rules.
Being a woman and foreign, I certainly did not know all the Rules.
One day, a college professor came to the office looking for some rental properties to buy.
So, I tried to help him.
I did find him a piece of property that we both thought to be suitable. We made a contract between the owner and him, and we proceeded to get him a loan and so on.
I detected a strange look from my broker.
I did not know why.
I got some strange phone calls, from some irate people, screaming at me for trying to sell the property in their neighborhood.
I did not know why either.
Well, I do now.
My college professor was non-White!
Long story short, someone fixed it so that the loan was not approved. The bank approved the Professor, but the bank rejected the appraisal of the house - saying that it did not meet standards.
I was dumbfounded.
I knew our little town had very few non-white people. I am one.
But I did not know that it was not the thing to do to sell properties in just any neighborhood to Non-white people!
Besides, he was not even going to be living there!
I eventually figured out that I Broke one the Unwritten And Unspoken rules of the Game in our town, in our business circle.
What could I say? I did not think there should be such a rule.
But I could not talk to anyone about it, not even my broker.
And I thought I was in a country where equality was one of the given.
Then,I remembered the Lumber Yard owner who refused to rent his rental to me and my family.
Boy, was I naive?
How many of those Unwritten and Unspoken Rules are there? Can someone tell me!
